Vietnam sold 973,247 electric two-wheelers in the first nine months of 2026, up 90.5% year on year, according to MotorcyclesData figures cited by Electrek. Electric models now account for nearly one third of all new two-wheeler sales in the country.

VinFast led the surge with 152.1% growth, climbing to second place overall and topping the electric segment.

Vietnam's motorcycle market consumed more than 3 million two-wheelers in the first nine months of 2026, up 25.9% from a year earlier. The electric segment stood out with 973,247 units sold, a 90.5% jump, taking about 32% of total sales.

Yamaha ranked third, followed by electric-focused Yadea in fourth. Two of the top four brands now focus on electric two-wheelers, and they are growing the fastest.

Government moves to curb urban air pollution, including planned restrictions on gasoline motorcycles in parts of Hanoi, have supported the shift. Expanding charging and battery-swapping networks are also making electric models more practical for daily use.

The shift is supported by government policies to reduce urban air pollution and expanding charging infrastructure. VinFast and partners continue to add charging stations and battery swap cabinets across major cities.

With electric models now accounting for one in three new sales, Vietnam is becoming one of Southeast Asia's fastest-electrifying two-wheeler markets.

Honda remains the largest seller but its 8.4% growth lags the market, while Yamaha holds third place. The rapid electrification is reshaping a market long dominated by Japanese gasoline brands.

Why it matters: Vietnam shows how fast electric two-wheelers can go mainstream when prices fall and charging networks expand. One in three new bikes sold is now electric. For the region, Vietnam's shift signals that Southeast Asia's two-wheeler markets may electrify faster than expected, reshaping competition long dominated by Japanese gasoline brands. For consumers, the electric shift means more choices, lower running costs, and cleaner urban air as one third of new bikes go electric.
