Electric Cars Take Six of Vietnam’s Ten Best-Seller Spots in September

Vietnam sold 62,590 cars in September 2026, and electric models took six of the ten best-seller spots, including the entire top five, all VinFast models.

Vietnam’s car market sold 62,590 vehicles in September 2026, up 29 percent from August, and the composition of that total matters more than the headline. Electric models took six of the ten best-seller spots for the month, including the entire top five, a clean sweep that would have been hard to imagine in Southeast Asia’s most motorbike-heavy market only a few years ago.

Almost all of those electric sales carry one badge. VinFast delivered 23,624 electric cars in September, up 17 percent from August, equal to about 37.7 percent of all cars sold in Vietnam that month. Across the first nine months of 2026, the company delivered 177,697 cars, up 71.9 percent year-on-year. It has now led the national market for 25 consecutive months, according to company announcements. The nine-month figure already exceeds VinFast’s full-year 2025 total of 175,099 cars.

The best-seller chart shows how broad the shift has become. The compact VF 3 led the market with 6,474 cars, its third consecutive month at number one. The seven-seat Limo Green MPV followed with 5,027, ahead of the VF 6 at 3,083 and the VF 5 at 2,472. The VF 2, the smallest and cheapest model in the lineup, entered the chart for the first time at fifth place with 2,433 cars. The larger VF 8 ranked seventh with 1,494 and led the D-segment SUV class, while the best-placed gasoline model, the Toyota Yaris Cross, came sixth with 1,799.

Price is doing much of the work. The VF 2 starts at 188 million dong, a figure that puts a new car within reach of first-time urban buyers who once defaulted to a motorbike or a used import. At the other end, family buyers and ride-hailing drivers have made the Limo Green the country’s best-selling MPV, well ahead of its gasoline rivals.

Dealers and market watchers cited by Thanh Nien point to running costs as the decisive argument. Electricity and maintenance undercut gasoline by a wide margin, fuel prices keep drifting upward, and drivers who earn their living on the road feel the difference every month. Company policy strengthens the pull. VinFast owners charge their vehicles for free at V-Green public stations through February 10, 2029, and a gasoline trade-in program offered incentives of up to 9 percent during September, according to company announcements.

The transition is not a one-way collapse of the old market. Every gasoline model in the top ten grew strongly in September, and hybrid sales among VAMA members reached 2,168 cars, up 36 percent from August. Vietnam’s electrification is arriving in layers, with battery-electric models setting the pace at the top of the chart and hybrids serving buyers who are not ready to depend on public charging.

The nine-month picture underlines the scale. Total sales reached 495,138 cars, up 26.8 percent year-on-year, based on figures compiled by VnEconomy from VAMA, Thanh Cong Group and VinFast. If the September pace holds through the year-end peak season, the full-year total could challenge the record of 604,134 cars set in 2025.

For investors, the questions have shifted. The issue is no longer whether Vietnam will electrify, but whether charging capacity, grid readiness and after-sales networks can keep pace with a sales mix that is changing this quickly. It also leaves open how legacy brands will price their response. A transition led by a domestic champion, rather than by imports, is a pattern worth watching across the region.
